Approach: From the bridge/parking lot, follow the hiking sign (wooden sign) "Cascata do Arado" (orographic left). Shortly you will reach the viewpoint at 750m where you can check the water level before continuing up. The path is marked with stone markers and leads through a beautiful mountain landscape. After a few meters of altitude you cross a tributary (left) of the Arado river and shortly after you come to a fork in the road. On a hill you can already see the big 45m waterfall. Continue in a right turn between the Arado and the left tributary until you reach another hill with a view of the enchanting Arado high valley. Keeping left, one descends shortly to the path at 930m (entry) (if one does not want to do the waterfall, one descends before to the path).
Tour: The canyon begins with a walking passages and small downclimb in open terrain. This is followed by 3 shorter rappel sections where the last rappel, before the big waterfall, can be jumped. The high waterfall (45m) is rappelled on the right with little water contact. Immediately after follows an exposed belay on the right side. The fixed traverese rope is not normally needed. To make the descent easier for others, because of a narrow spot (danger of entrapment), the first person can set up a rope line (drill hooks available at the bottom). Now follows a long walking and descending section with some possible jumps. A higher sloping step in the middle of the canyon can be rappelled left or bypassed right. Shortly after, there is a pool with several possible jumps (beware of the stone in the pool!). An aquatic cascade of 3 steps follows, which are also the last steps. In order to get to the first rappel of the cascade, you have to rappel in front of the huge granite block under which you swim (stand on the right). Access: From the dam bridge (Rio Cavado) Geres you drive in the direction of Vila do Geres/ Espanha. After about 6 km, turn right in the direction of Ermida. From here, follow the mountain road in the direction of Ermida. Continue until you reach a fork in the road with signs for "Cascata do Arado". After turning right, the asphalt road changes to a gravel road with holes that goes down to the Arado. Directly at the bridge there are several parking possibilities.

Approach: From the parking lot at approx. 430m, follow the path left of the road to the pipeline, which is already visible on the approach. Be careful not to take the path along the ridge here, but always climb along the pipeline (some thorn bushes). A little further up you will come to a fence. Follow the path, which is still clearly visible at the beginning, slightly uphill. Gradually, the path/trail becomes less and less recognizable. Cross the slope with little difference in altitude until you reach a ridge. Here you descend briefly (old wooden paths). Continue along the path until you reach a beautiful rocky viewpoint at approx. 550m. From the viewpoint, descend again along the rock face until the 60m waterfall becomes visible. You can choose to enter above or below the waterfall. (To enter above, look for a suitable path above the rock fence waterfall.) The last meters to the lower entry are downclimbed or rappelled on a small step at approx. 500m, 10m (bolts available).
Tour: The tour starts above or below the 60m waterfall, depending on the entry option. You can jump left and right into the beautiful large pools. This is followed by a small step that is rappelled from the left. Then comes a short walking and abseiling section. The next step is either jumped 12m (deep pool) or rappelled left. This is followed by another walking and abseiling section that exits at the last step before the inflow of er. Here you can first rappel left 5m on a ledge and then jump another 5m. From the tributary it is another 40 minutes of walking and downclimbing in an open canyon, interrupted by a 5-10m jump in the middle. Approach: (with 2nd car: 0min) From the parking exit (approx. 220m) follow the road for approx. 20min to the bridge with the large turnout on the left. Directly at the signs Lago4 you descend 20m to the stream.
Tour: The tour starts with a nice 8-12m jump in a large pool (bolts left). This is followed by a longer walking and abseiling section which is not boring due to several possible jumps. Caution is advised on some slippery downclimbs as there are often hidden stones under the water surface. In the middle of the canyon, there are then two compelling rappels (10/15m), interrupted by a short walking passages with possible jumps (4/7m). The 15m rappel is followed by another longer walk and downclimb into a somewhat narrower canyon. Here you downclimb skillfully over slippery rocks before reaching the last steps. The first steps are usually bypassed on the right using a traverese rope that can be pulled off (watch out for the first pool, which often recedes). This is followed by a cascade of 5 and 15m which can be jumped and slid/jumped and rappelled or only rappelled (be careful with the last edge due to the current/fall). Access: Desde España por el embalse de Lindoso (OU540) hacia Portugal o desde Ponte da Barca hacia España por la N203. A la altura del puente del Río Tamente giraremos hacia Ermida por la CM1348 y seguiremos por la CM1349. Pasaremos Froufe y tras pasar Lourido tendremos una curva a derechas con el río a nuestra izquierda abajo. Aquí hay una zona para aparcar el coche de retorno o si solo llevamos uno. Con el coche de acceso seguimos por la carretera y justo al lado del puente sobre el río tenemos mucho sitio donde aparcar.

]]>Rio Conho: Canyon StartApproach: Si tenemos dos coches desde la pista de acceso solo habrá que bajar al río por la pista que sale a la derecha de la casa: Si solo tenemos un coche, en el cruce de pistas tendremos que subir por la pista de la izquierda, la de la derecha es el retorno. Podremos llegar hasta la casa y girar a la derecha para bajar por la pista hasta el río.
Tour: The tour begins at 680m with a longer walking and downclimbing section with a few small steps that can be jumped (be careful!) or downclimbed (max. 10m). After approx. 40-45 minutes you reach the highest abseiling point. First you rappel 10m and then you can choose between the 37m right (slippery) in the water or left out of the water. Shortly afterwards, there is another 20m abseil (left). After this last higher rappel, there are two small slippery steps, the first of which is downclimbed on the left and the next on the right. The following blocked open terrain is bypassed as far left as possible until you reach a forest road (Steinmanderl). Exit at approx. 480m.]]>Rio Conho: Canyon EndReturn: Follow the forest road for only about 80m. Then follow the inconspicuous path left on the orographic right side of the stream. Approach: From Belvdere on the road closed with barrier in a wide curve up to 740 m above sea level, then beyond 65 meters of altitude down to the stream.
Tour: It is an attractive tour, although relatively long and serious, which generates certain difficulties due to insufficient belays. The fact that there is no anchor at the first 6 m drop seems understandable in view of the fact that the canyon is located in a national park, even if an explicit prohibition is not perceptible (2007). So about after the third high rappel, the water disappears in a long rock crevice. Here, during the first search, only an anchor with a thin rope was found, which could not have been reached without a rope belay; moreover, it would have forced the rappeler directly into the narrow crevice with a strong water flow. After the bridge, turn right and follow the signs for Fisgas do Ermelo. If you have 2 vehicles, park the first one 1 km after the junction at the bridge at a track on the right (stone posts on both sides) (440 m a.s.l.).With the other vehicle, continue uphill, at the chapel at the saddle then on the far right and up to the Belvedere at the end of the road (3.1 km from the lower vehicle parking, 600 m a.s.l.). Here park 2nd vehicle and take a look at the waterfalls, but they are visible here only to a small extent.

Access: From Porto on the A 1/E 1 approx. 53 km southwards. At Aveira take the intersecting A 25/IP 5/E 80 in the direction of Viseu (east). About 20 km after the turn at exit 9, leave the highway in the direction of Sever de Vouga. A little later, cross the Rio Vouga and, after the bridge, take the N16 that runs along the river in an easterly direction. Pass through Paredes and continue along the river on the EM 569. 44 km after leaving the freeway, turn right onto the N 227 and enter Sao Jao da Serra. At the central square in the village, behind the church, the road to Cercal branches off. At the end of Cercal, follow the forest road for another 3 km, avoiding oncoming traffic if possible. We now follow Levada 25 Fontes, crossing Rib. Grande and then reach Rib. da Água Negra below the 50m waterfall, where the 25 springs trickle out of the basalt below. Here is the entry to Rib. Água Negra inferiore. However, we continue to follow the levada and finally reach Rib. dos Cedros. There is also an access option via the "Levadas das 25 Fontes" through the "Tunel do Rabacal". Parking is required at the barbecue area at the third last hairpin bend of the ER211.

Access: On the ER 105 one drives either from Encumeada or from Porto Moniz to the mentioned plateau. It can also be reached from Calheta via the ER 211. On the western edge of the plateau, the ER 105 passes the Hotel Pico da Urze with the restaurant 'Jungle Rain' at 1400 m altitude. From here, drive 2 km in the direction of Porto Moniz (back if necessary) and then turn right down onto a small tarred road. This is then closed after 50 m with a barrier. In front of the barrier there is plenty of space on the left for parking the vehicle.

Approach: We now continue along the "main road", the tarred surface ends (anno 2016) and after about 200m we turn off onto a dirt road to the right. We follow it - on the right below we see the also canyoning accessible stream Alem - and come about 700m after the junction to a bridge over the Alem. It now goes 100m further slightly uphill, then we turn right at a fork of the track and reach a small meadow plain. 300m after the last fork, the track enters the forest. Here, in 2016, construction work was in progress to extend the slope. The slope transformed into an old mule track. Roughly estimated about 900m after entering the forest (anno 2016), a path completely overgrown with ginger plants branches off to the right. It is very difficult to find and was also overlooked by us at first. The approximate GPS coordinates for the turnoff are 39°27'56.14 "N 31°10'20.42 "W. We follow this old path down to the river. Measured entry coordinates here are 39°27'59.0 "N 31°10'19.7 "W.
Tour: The tour starts with a jump into a large pool under a rock overhang on the left bank. After about 40 min. of wading, downclimbing and swimming, we come to a 12m rappel (according to the cited book - estimated probably just under 10m) into a large, almost circular pool. Here we jumped. After another 45 min. we come to an inclined rappel (16m), which leads into a large, also circular pool. Immediately afterwards, the last rappel (19m) awaits us. After that we go downstream for another 20 minutes until we reach the reservoir. Turn left onto the EM 526 and after another 3.5 km you will arrive in Montaria. Go through the village keeping to the right and turn left at a bend to the right ('Viveiro Forestal do Portodeira'). The road, which is no longer paved at the exit, descends in a northerly direction to a picnic area by the bridge (entry).

Approach: We overcome the barrier and follow the dirt road in a southwesterly direction. After 210 m it turns to the north, we ignore the turnoff straight ahead. After another 300 m we are at the Ribeira do Ferreiro below a waterfall. On the left bank we go down the stream for about 50 m, then we enter the stream (if necessary with a jump after prior testing).
Tour: After only 5 minutes we come to the first rappel (R1 - 45m). Now, interrupted by short walking passages, one rappel follows the other: R2 - 24m; R3 - 10m; R4 - 17m. A longer passage follows, where the stream course is covered with large boulders. \nThen we are above the big vertical - almost 110m. After the entry rappel R5 - 20m, 3 switchbacks follow, each set back a bit (danger of falling rocks) to the left: R6 - 45m; R7 - 10m; R8 - 40m. Then you swim in the large pool, which is also fed by a left side stream. In case of larger water flow, there may be difficulties here (a5). Approach: In the same direction, follow the initially wide, later narrower path, cross the dam on the right and continue through the forest until you reach a wooden sign "Vereda dos Barbinhas". Cross the river Seixal here and look for the faintly recognizable path opposite (cairn). Climb up the steep wall until you reach the Levada do Seixal. Change here (there is no room for this at the entry point!) and then walk to the left for a few minutes to the entry point.
Tour: The first step can be rappelled down a small tree, downclimbing is often tricky because the rock is very slippery. From now on, abseiling point follows abseiling point, and after three waterfalls, the two high Multipitch waterfalls are already waiting. If you don't miss the intermediate stands, you can work with 40-meter ropes. After a spectacular series of three high abseils, there is a short break to catch your breath before the next exciting passage is reached. This is also the only really deep pool on the tour. The tour then comes to a relaxed end with two short abseils. Approach: On the left, the mule track goes towards Ponta dos Ilhéus and the entry to Ilhéus inferior. But we continue to the right up the long straight road, following the signs Ponta Ruiva, Peninha and Cabouco. A small sign here also points the way to the Ilhéus med. as well as to the Alquevins. The wide mule track, paved with unhewn stones, narrows and, after reaching the highest point, goes slightly downhill again. At a fork we stay left and a little later we arrive at the entry to the Ilhéus med. We continue along the mule track, we cross two more streams, we keep left down at a fork of the path, we cross another stream and with the fourth stream we reach our entry.
Tour: The stream, which never notches very deep, begins with several (3) small (max. 10m) rappels and initially shorter, then longer walking passages. After about half an hour we come to the first higher rappel - R4 (30m). This is followed by the inclined rappel R5 (35m). We swim through a longer pool, at the exit of which an impressive view of the sea and the coast opens up. The following step of 45m can be done by rope or after about 25m left / or 30m right break (R6/R7).Here should be a last emergency exit possibility (pathless through the jungle) before reaching the final vertical leading into the sea. After another small swimming passage we come to the final highlight, the 70m drop down to the sea. Again, there are alternative abseil routes to the left of the "beam" or on the right edge of the beam. We first rappelled 15m to the right edge of the ray (R8), then 30m keeping slightly to the right to an intermediate belay which is 18m above the sea. These 18m (R7) can also be jumped. A few meters above sea level there is apparently another anchor. After the stream, the path would rise again.
Tour: We enter a comparatively little open canyon. Jumps or slides are sometimes possible throughout the canyon, but only after thorough prior examination. First, 4 rappels between 15m and 18m await us, A longer walking passages follows, where possibilities for an emergency exit to the left would open up. After a 20m rappel and a shorter walking section, the stream begins to deepen from the 6th rappel (8m). After 2 more rappels (11m u. 10m) and some passages of rappel we look out to the sea and then stand at the final rappel, 22m above the sea. Approach: We go back on the road 50 m in the direction of Fajã Grande. Here a larger gap opens up between the houses. We turn left and follow the path that initially goes along the left edge of the field bordered with rough stones towards the slope (anno 2016 here wooden signpost "Canyon J. Fraga inferiore/Cao inferiore/Casas inferiore"). The trail enters the coppice forest and moves only slightly uphill at the beginning. After about 10 min and about 20 m, before the trail exits the coppice to the north, a side trail turns left uphill (2016 also trail sign "Canyon"). Now it goes steeply uphill. At elevation 138 a.s.l. we cross the Fraga River at the ruins of a mill. We continue, often over steps, until at 320 a.s.l. a path leaves the main path on the left (2016 signs to the left to Fraga inferiore, to the right up to Cao and Casas, both inferiore). After a few meters we are in the stream (entry).

Approach: On the left, the mule track goes towards Ponta dos Ilhéus and the entry to Ilhéus inferior. We continue from the right up the long straight road, following the signs Ponta Ruiva, Peninha and Cabouco. A small sign here also points the way to the Ilhéus med. as well as to the Alquevins. The wide mule track, paved with unhewn stones, narrows and, after reaching the highest point, goes slightly downhill again. At a junction we stay left and a little later we come to the stream and thus to the entry.

Approach: We now follow this trail, crossing successively two streams and after about 30 minutes we come to a third, "our" stream (entry).
Tour: After a few meters, the first rappel (R1 - 13m) awaits us. There follow 4 more rappels (max. 11m) in the openly dahinplätschernden stream. Then several steps with a rappel überwunden (R6 - 40m). After that würde an exit möglichkeit eröffnen. Now begins the vertical part. Üvia R7 - 7m, R8 -35m, R8a - 4m, R9 -24m and R10 - 6m we reach the "Schlüsselstelle", an almost 100m high vertical wall, which is part of a largeßen cauldron and opens up an impressive deep view of the sea and the depths below. Return: We turn right and after some time we come to a rocky outcrop protruding into the sea, which is climbed around. A fixed rope facilitates the descent here (2016). In the following bay, purple markings lead upärts and orographic (!) to the left of the descending ditch. In 2016, on the occasion of the international meeting (CIMA), the path was cut out by the ginger wild growth, but this will probably be different in years when such a meeting does not take place on Flores. After reaching the plateau, we cross the meadow and rejoin the PR1FLO trail that we took. Approach: You can now walk down the closed tarred road not quite 2 km to the houses of Rabacal or take a shuttle bus (2 euros down, 3 euros up). From Rabacal (good signposting - 2010), first follow the Levado do Risco for a few hundred meters in the direction of Cascada do Risco; then the signpost 'Levada 25 Fontes' prompts us to descend onto it. We now follow the Levada 25 Fontes, cross the Rib. Grande and then reach the Rib. da Água Negra below the 50 m waterfall, where the 25 springs trickle out of the basalt below.\n\nAn access option is also available via the "Levadas das 25 Fontes" through the "Tunel do Rabacal". You must then park at the barbecue area in the third-last hairpin bend of the ER211.
Tour: Even the approach is a pleasure; after the interesting access (with possible jumps), there is a longer walking passages in off-road terrain before it gets interesting again - and stays that way. Tour: From the railing, rappel into the canyon. This is followed by a 15-meter-high rappel, shortly afterwards the technically complex 90-meter waterfall on the left bank, consisting of a short feeder and the initially free-hanging C90. The extremely exposed abseil stand is very far ahead and can only be reached via another short abseil point and a lot of skill or experience. The rope course is free-hanging over a long stretch and therefore very gentle on the rope. Approach: From Ribeira Funda it is a short, easy to find hiking trail to the canyon of the same name. It starts at the parking lot to the right of the house. Always follow this path without turning left into the plantations. After a good 10 minutes you reach the mostly dry streambed of the canyon. Enter the Funda or alternatively follow the path to Terra d'Alem, which flows into the Funda.
Tour: It starts with a downclimb, a small rappel and a short run. This is followed by the 60 meter high waterfall, for which there are anchor points both on the right bank and on the left bank (on the tree). For both abseil points there are anchors for a rope traverse / feeder, for the right-bank feeder to the belay station of the C60 these are very far back. There is room for a maximum of three people at the two belays, so larger groups must plan for ropes for the feeders (2x20m). These can then also be used for the short abseils. Below the C60, the canyon is cut deep, at the following C8 it becomes almost dark. This is followed by several small to medium rappels, jumpable a maximum of twice. Approach: By car: Walk up the Vereda das Furnas stairway, which offers a great first impression of the waterfalls. When the path flattens out, stay on it for a few more minutes until a small path between a wooden telephone pole and a steel electricity pylon leads down into the cultivated fields. Orientation is somewhat difficult here, depending on the path you choose, you will end up more or less high up in the stream. Ideally, you should start the tour under a large tree with a small downclimb a few meters before the first rappel. (60 min) With two cars: Walk a few meters further towards the village and then descend the stairway and follow it along the houses. Approach: First follow the path to the Levada do Pico da Urze, then follow this levada for a short distance to reach the Lajeado canyon. Alternative access: Park in Rabacal, from there an easy 3.5km walk along the Levada de Alecrim to the canyon. If you start here (and not 200m further up), you can save yourself a longer streambed hike, but you will miss R1. If you despair at this easy jump, you can always climb over it from below (more jumps follow anyway).
Tour: We were in the first part, which is particularly suitable for canyoning enthusiasts who love jumping. The highest parts in this part measure 20 meters. The second part follows on seamlessly with an 80-meter cascade. Comment: Die Schlucht beginnt unter der Brücke vor dem Tunnel

Approach: 1) From the fish farm, walk further into the valley until you reach a broken dam. Cross it orographic left (stairs) and follow the path through the forest. At the exit before the river Seixal there is a wooden sign "Lombo Barbinhas". Cross the river here and continue straight ahead towards the mountain (faint tracks). Then follow the steep path uphill (single wooden steps, rotten) until you reach the Levada do Seixal (water channel). Follow this to the right in the direction of flow. About 100 meters later there is a small path that leads further uphill. Follow this until you reach the Levada do Norte. Here we go left in the direction of flow of the levada for 500 m until we reach a bridge and a tunnel. The canyon begins under the bridge. (2h) 2) From the upper parking lot we walk almost north on a wide track ("Terra Cha"). We pass the accesses to Seixal superior and Hortela superior (both on the left). After a good 2.1 km (30 min), we turn left onto the slightly sloping slope. This leads to a hiking trail that descends steeply through the forest to the Levada do Norte ("Vereda do Lombo Barbinhas"). Once you reach the levada, turn right and follow the levada in the direction of flow for 500 meters until you reach a bridge and a tunnel. The canyon begins under the bridge. (1h45min)
Tour: The canyon begins rather harmlessly with a few short downclimbs and abseils up to a maximum of 15 meters. Then, somewhat unexpectedly, you are confronted with a huge panorama that stretches as far as the parking lot at the fish farm. A 20-meter rope traverse / rappel brings us to the edge of a "mega" waterfall. After another 15 meters, we reach the last, extremely exposed and free-hanging abseil, after which the wall overhangs. From here, the route descends 150 meters into the depths, the first 130 of which are free-hanging. There is only room for 2 people at each belay station, so take ropes with you. On every second tour, the falling ropes fall into unreachable, sharp-edged ledges from which they can no longer be pulled out. There have already been several rescues! Approach: From the parking entry, follow the path on the right that leads towards the mountain and after a few meters crosses a small bridge and then a streambed that is almost always dry. The trail then climbs up the slope parallel to a wall for a few minutes. Depending on the state of maintenance, which varies greatly from year to year, a machete is helpful. Currently (November 2024), the path is very passable, even if it is narrow and exposed in places in the upper section. Finally, the path turns off into the forest and shortly afterwards you reach a large tree with a large blue (also November 2024) sling attached to its roots. (Total approx. 10 minutes) From here, you can rope a good 25 meters into the canyon. The access is marked with a red dashed line on the map provided here.

Access: From Sao Vicente: Drive in the direction of Porto Moniz. Approx. 500 m after the Seixal tunnel, turn left steeply uphill and park at the top next to the picnic table. From Porto Moniz: Drive in the direction of Sao Vicente. Drive through the Faja Contreiras tunnel, then through another short tunnel, 100 meters after that turn steeply right at the top, park at the top next to the picnic table. There is the (less sensible) option of parking a second car at the end of the canyon (exit parking lot), turn off onto the old ER 101 between the short tunnel and the Faja Contreiras tunnel. Sometimes this road is closed. There is often some debris on it, which indicates the risk of falling rocks. After a good 100 meters you reach the final waterfall. Shortly afterwards, you can park your car on the left. When the waves are high, water sometimes splashes over the wall.

Approach: From the viewpoint, follow the old coastal road back towards Sao Vicente. Shortly before the old tunnel, which is now buried, a steep path goes up on the right-hand side. At the beginning, this is easily recognizable and obvious from the old steps. After a short time, the quality of the old path deteriorates noticeably. The condition becomes worse and worse and more dangerous. If you have a queasy feeling, it is better to turn back immediately. The path is very overgrown in places. Progress is therefore very difficult and slow. After about 200 meters in altitude, the worst is over and the path is in better condition again.
Tour: Beautiful canyon. Anchor points all in good condition, some with high-quality titanium glued anchors. Approx. 20 to 30 meters below the anchor point of the C90, orographic to the right, there is a rock window of the tunnel of the old coastal road ER 101. The canyon can be exited here at high tide or if the waves are too strong. However, there is NO longer a safe way back via the ER101 due to numerous landslides. Large parts of the old road no longer exist! The intermediate stand in the final waterfall is exposed and, depending on the wind, is more or less exposed to the spray. Approach: By car: Follow the road to Faja da Ribeira in a wide arc and take the Vereda da Eira do Mourao path upwards. Unfortunately, the route is not entirely clear at the start, with various similar-looking paths leading between the houses. Follow this path through the mountainside until it crosses the stream at a small bridge. (40 min) With two cars: A short easy trail (Vereda da Eira do Mourao) leads down through the houses at the exit of the road heading south. It crosses the stream at the entry point. It is quite steep in places but well maintained. (15 min)
Tour: At the bridge into the stream, which is usually very slippery here. Downclimbing is virtually impossible. The first anchor is somewhat hidden far ahead on a ledge. Several medium-height abseils warm you up for the 90-meter-high final waterfall. This is conquered using rope traverses and two lengths. You are sure to be watched from the supermarket parking lot! Caution: Always stay on the ropes until the next anchor! The canyon is not optimally equipped (as of early 2024). Some of the next anchor points cannot be reached if you pull off the rope too early! With two cars: Take the second car via Campanario in the direction of Sao Paulo and then drive to Eira de Mourao. Park at the exit of the Estr. da Eira do Neto. In terms of time, the shuttle is not worth it, it's more for lazy canyonists who don't feel like lugging the long ropes to the top.

2025-04-17: Look carefully for the access route.
Approach: Follow the road, which turns into a path after a few meters. A little later, follow a dry streambed uphill to the left (mostly blue signs (Poco das Pulgas). Initially, the path is logical and self-explanatory, but later there is a risk of missing important junctions and getting lost in the dense forest! Without local knowledge, it is best to use GPS tracks for navigation. The access path exits at R3. Continue upstream to the waterfall (Poco das Pulgas, R2). Now you can see the first two waterfalls. Move here (there is little space at the top), then follow the steep and muddy path on the right bank. It leads closely along a rock face and there is a rope traverse at a tricky passage. Finally you reach the entry point.
Tour: Regardless of whether you start at R1 or R3, the tour begins immediately with the first rappel. The waterfalls follow each other quickly in extremely lush vegetation. In R6 and R7 there are anchor points on the left and right. The orographic ones on the left are extremely uncomfortable and lead through the main stream when the water level is high. It is better to use the glued anchors on the right. The first two are a feeder for the rappel, which is two meters below the edge. The rope sling at the front of the tree should not be used (anymore), the tree is rotten and will eventually fall out of the wall. If the water level is normal, there is a small slide before the last waterfall, then climb out of the pool on the right. If the water level is high, you can rappel down the slide on a single hook. The danger of being swept over the edge by a strong current is real after a slide. In R 8 there are two starting points at the top, after three meters a point as a redirection point (pulling off from the bottom is then somewhat difficult) or another three meters further on a ledge an abseiling point. (30 minutes) From the official parking lot, take the old coastal road heading northwest and follow it until you reach an old, steep tunnel. Follow the road uphill to its exit, see above. Access: Park in Achadas da Cruz at the mountain station for the cable car (Teleferico) (1 car). If you have a 2nd car: Drive back up the road and after 1.2 km take the first right (Rua Juvenal Isidoro de Carvalho). Follow this asphalt road for a good 350 meters and park on the right just before the exit (2 parking spaces by an electricity pylon).
Return: When you reach the sea, turn orographic right (the sea will be on your left). If the high tide cuts off the path at the first rock ledge, you can climb it. There is an anchor at the top to rappel down the other side. After a good 15 minutes over rough scree, you can climb 2 to 3 meters up a bad staircase of boulders on the right. Follow the path at the top until it joins a paved road. Now turn left and walk to the valley station of the cable car (45 min). Take this to the top. Pay attention to the travel times and don't forget to pay for your ride at the top (one way 3 euros (January 2026)). If the cable car does not run (wind, too late, broken), there is the option of climbing 200 meters northeast of the cable car via the Vereda do Calhau to the top station. Approach: If 1 car is available, take the path described above on foot (approx. 25 minutes). Then turn right and walk the few meters to the exit of the concrete road, follow the path downhill. Cross the slope and continue downhill (the path gets a little lost here). Turn right at the ruined house and follow the more or less mown path. It leads along an edge slightly above former fields. At the exit, turn left downhill through the bamboo, past two ruins. Continue along the mown path, keeping straight ahead at any junctions, the left-hand arms are former attempts at access. Another ruin. Turn right here into the small "forest" and continue along the highest part towards the sea. A few sawn-off trees serve as a guide. Finally, you are at the edge of the sea, which breaks in waves on the pebble beach over 500 meters further down. Approach: From the parking lot, follow the stone steps down to the levada. The streambed is almost always dry for the first few meters. The abseiling fun begins at the entry with a C20, two anchors on the left. Here you can judge the amount of water falling from the levada into the canyon. Approach: Option 1 with a car: From the harbor, hike through the canyon on the Caminho Real do Paul do Mar. This beautiful path offers several views of the two high waterfalls during the ascent, allowing you to check the water level, among other things. At the first junction at approx. 360m, follow the path on the left (Vereda da Maloeira). It crosses the stream directly at the entry point. Total time approx. 1 hour. Variant 2 with two cars: From the upper parking lot, take the concrete track (Rua do Pico) towards the sea, after approx. 200 meters the Vereda do Maloeira hiking trail branches off to the right. We will pass by the Ribeiro de Sao Joao, if we have two cars, we would leave the access car here. We will continue along the track turning north below Arga de Baixo. 800m after passing the river there is a track on the left, go down it for 1km and park, we will be just above where the Sao Joao receives the contribution on the left. Here we leave the return or if we only have a car
