You should be careful with the small slides and possible jumps, as the pools are often covered in gravel. The abseiling points in the canyon are usually no higher than 10m. However, individual narrow sections can be quite unpleasant at higher water levels. In the lower flat and open section of the gorge (after the 1st inflow from the right) there are longer walking and downclimbs interrupted by a few small steps/abseils. Take a drill with you in the narrow section where a pick has been torn out
Approach: Continue on foot along the forest road along the Gießenbach stream. After about 500 m we see the short (only 100 m long) Hintere Gießenbachklamm gorge on the right below the road. After 800 m (from the parking lot) the Alpbach flows into the Giessenbach from the left, we continue along the Giessenbach and after almost 2 km we reach the Naturfreundehaus Gießenbachhütte. We continue straight ahead for about 100m, then the forest path exits at a somewhat confusing fork into several paths.
This is where we climbed up the steep slope above the Gießenbach stream on the right.
However, various topo maps also show a path (not verified) which, after crossing the Giessenbach stream, climbs up the opposite orographic right-hand slope to an altitude of 1200 m, then runs roughly horizontally in a basically westerly direction, and after crossing the 3rd stream (according to the map) leads down to the right into the gravel bed of the upper Giessenbach stream (entry at 1140 m altitude).
Continuing along the northern slope above the Giessenbach, the hunters path, which is also somewhat exposed at times, also leads us up to an altitude of around 1200 m. At about the point where the path emerges from the sparse forest onto the meadows above, we take a track that runs horizontally along the slope and then descend on sight into the wide gravel bed of the Giessenbach stream. We enter the stream at the same point as the access from the opposite side.
Tour: First we walk almost horizontally in the wide streambed until we reach the first drop. At the time (2006), there was a pack of ibex in the gravel bed, which was not impressed by our arrival and only climbed up the slope for about 10 m to let us pass.\n\nThere are now running sections, rappel passages and a few rappels. Here you can buy an entrance ticket (2007: 2,50 ¤) and continue along the path through the canyon until the path forks at the exit. Turn right over the wooden bridge and continue for about 100 m until you reach a bench on the orographic left side of the stream.
Tour: At the first waterfall, there is no need to rappel through the water, even if it looks very unpleasant from below. If there is a lot of water, the narrow channel in the middle section may be tricky and you may have problems reaching the safety hook at the top left. The small waterfall below forms a siphon with the rock above, which can be jumped from after checking the underwater.
Approach the final waterfall in the narrow chute on the right. For the long final slide, place your backside on the left-hand side of the edge of the swim pit, right on a slightly protruding nose, to get the best possible entry into the elevated bends. Even then, however, the slide is not controllable, the impact is usually broadside directly on the edge of the gorge below the rock, but landing on the rock and sliding into the water is also no problem.
The gorge has the status of a natural monument and may not be entered before May 15th due to the dipper breeding season. The gorge is also heavily frequented commercially.</desc></wpt><wpt lat="47.53150000" lon="10.30940000">
<desc>v3 a4 III | 35min/1h30/10min | 3.25⭐ | 20m
2025-06-25: Upper entry to the rappel through the waterfall is possible again.

Here we can cross to the left into a side cirque of the Schellaine, where the descent begins.
However, it is worth ascending a little further here and then crossing into the next cirque at about the same altitude to start the descent in the stream.
Tour: First some rappels, then also running sections, before the rappels increase again. It later climbs steeply and we come to a forest path (780m above sea level). The forest path continues along a hunters path ("for experienced hikers only"). After a further 35 minutes we reach an indistinct fork (1020 m above sea level). Here we do not continue right up the ridge towards Zundereck (red dots), but go straight on into the forest. The path heads south, always slightly uphill, and after about half an hour (from the fork) we come to a striking rock face that towers above the path. Right here we look for the somewhat inconspicuous tracks that branch off to the left downhill from the previous path. It leads to the Archtal hunting lodge and takes us to the entry to the Urlaine.
If you want a more rugged access, take the old gorge trail (partly exposed) up to the Archtal hunting lodge and on to the entry point (see Google map under Weblinks).
Tour: A mudslide cleared the stream around 2012, especially of the many deadwoods that used to be found here. On the other hand, it flattened almost all but a few anchors. We made do with 80 m of rope and a few "emergency operations" at the belays. The highest rappel is only 15 m, but rappels from trees or rappels over several steps require more rope. Replacing all anchors with anchors would make the tour take a day and then there would be no glued anchors. So if you have to, then use a drill. We soon come to the next waterfall. Here there is no anchor directly at the waterfall (2018 - but rappels from trees are possible on both sides). However, a knotted rope with a double belay (!) is anchored on the recessed rock face on the righthand side. This avoids the waterfall.
This is followed by two short underground passages (optional). Now begins the first phase of a streambed hike with obstacles. After about 20 minutes, the next and last rappel follows (anchor on the right on the rock ledge, rappel outside the beam).
This is followed by a good hour of tiring walking and climbing (many tree obstacles) in the streambed until you reach the mouth of the Schmiedlaine into the Lainbach.</desc></wpt><wpt lat="47.68460000" lon="11.44320000">
<desc>v3 a3 II | 1h20/2h30/40min | 1.45⭐ | 26m
Return: We follow the path downstream on the left bank of the Lainbach (see again https://www.outdooractive.com/de/bergtour/toelzer-land/benediktbeuern-tutzinger-huette-bendiktbeuern/103048679/#dm=1 - from km 14.5) and thus return to the car at the bridge (3.3 km route).</desc></wpt><wpt lat="47.69820000" lon="11.41580000">
<desc>v3 a3 II | 1h20/2h30/40min | 1.45⭐ | 26m
Comment: (descente_3)

Access: We drive to Benediktbeuern and from here continue on the B 11 towards Kochel am See. (descente)

Approach: Back to Krottenkopfstraße and 400m in a WNW direction. At the fork, turn right and then follow the signs to the Finz-Alm; after crossing the old ditch, you will pass a small service hut (left) and, after reaching the next height, you will see the open gravel streambed of the Finzbach and the Finz-Alm some distance to the right. Now descend to the stream, directly at the entry point.
Tour: First 3 easy rappels, then you come to the crux. The waterfall of the Altgraben shoots down from the left, while the collected water from both streams rushes into a narrow chute on the right. Descending this chute from the anchor on the right-hand wall is only advisable when the water flow is low.
Otherwise, you have to traverse at the same height over a slippery ledge into the left wall to an anchor fixed there (wire rope upwards) and rappel from here at the edge of the stream (20m). You can make the slippery ledge easier to grip with a wire or root brush. If necessary, scattering sand from the stream can also help. The safety rope for the first traverse should be attached to the left of the wall above the pool if possible, so that slipping is not associated with a fall into the chute and the stream. In 2018, the safety rope could be attached to tree trunks above the pool. In 2019, we placed several anchors on the left wall for the traverse and installed a fixed rope. If in doubt, the fixed ropes have to be pulled in again every year.
If the water flow is above average, entry via the old trench is recommended. In this case, the abseil length is approx. 30m to the said stand in the wall and 50m to the bottom.
Another possibly tricky spot can be found at the next rappel ("Hoher Fall"). Here you can see a gyro pump at the bottom, which can cause problems even with an average water flow. A fixed rope makes the exit easier here - also for the numerous bathers at the weekend - but sometimes it doesn't hang in the pool.
Then either place an anchor on the right edge of the waterfall or rope from the existing anchor (left on the wall) across the fall to the orographic right side to bypass the whirlpool below. In this case you should also install a floating anchor from the top (from the right side of the fall) to be on the safe side.
After the high fall, hike in the streambed to the exit at the water diversion (only exit right just before the dam!).</desc></wpt><wpt lat="47.51480000" lon="11.25470000">
<desc>v5 a4 III | 1h10/3h30/20min | 3.05⭐ | 30m
2024-05-20: Everything is tip top. The pool at the first rappel is not jumpable!
Comment: gros débit dans Finzbach: départ ici (Altgraben) (descente)

After the high fall, hike in the streambed to the exit at the water diversion (only exit right just before the dam!).</desc></wpt><wpt lat="47.50790000" lon="11.26790000">
<desc>v5 a4 III | 1h10/3h30/20min | 3.05⭐ | 30m
2024-05-20: Everything is tip top. The canyon is ideal for a short morning or afternoon tour and is also suitable for beginners or children. Immediately after the metal bridge at the entry point, there are two small slides and one of the two highest abseiling points (C15) in a narrow passage. This is followed by a small step and a longer open walking passage before the canyon narrows again. In the next part, there are several small steps that can be rappelled, slid or downclimbed. The next higher rappel (C10) can alternatively be dry rappelled on the left. Now follows the most beautiful part of the tour, a longer parts with the second 15m high abseil in the watercourse that goes 90° around the bends, beautiful washouts and some small slides. After another open walking passage, there is a casual abseil (C10) with a shower under a clamping block and the last incised gorge section where there are still many small slides and abseils. Towards the bottom, the canyon opens up more and more and you reach the lower metal bridge where you can decide whether you want to get out or overcome the last abseil. Attention! In one of the last pools where you can slide (approx. 100m before the bridge) there is a piece of metal (Oct.2023).</desc></wpt><wpt lat="47.71412100" lon="12.89619100">
<desc>v3 a2 I | 45min/1h45/8min | 2.95⭐ | 15m
2025-07-04: In fact, a much nicer canyon than you would expect. One car to the exit and one car to the upper parking lot. From the upper parking lot, follow the forest road to the Felixalm. From there, follow the poorly recognizable path in a north-easterly direction to the entry point.

Access variant 2:
We walk from the lower parking lot in a northerly direction along the forest road until it exits into a dilapidated path in a westerly direction. We follow this path until we finally cross the ditch (emergency exit). From here it is not far to the entry point.
