De entre los barrancos del río Hias, Fuente el Haya, Somo, Río Salto y Pasada Mala del Portillo de Ataxa, nos encontramos con este mastodonte, con una aproximación a su parte superior sin sendero pero entre hermosos bosques de hayas y verdes pastos en las cumbres del circo. Una parte superior abierta y de rápeles muy largos, dará paso a una parte inferior que va uniéndose al resto de barrancos, aumentando así el rumor de las aguas que nos llevarán hasta la magnífica cascada helicoidal. Mejor realizarlo en primavera o tras lluvias, de todas formas la parte más interesante y que realizan las empresas es entrando por el río Salto en su parte inferior. ¡En caso de querer realizar la parte superior del barranco, llevar material de equipamiento ya que las instalaciones están en mal estado o son inexistentes!

An open upper part and very long rappels, will give way to a lower part that will join the rest of the ravines, thus increasing the murmur of the waters that will take us to the magnificent helical waterfall. It is better to do it in spring or after rains, anyway the most interesting part and that the companies do is entering by the Salto river in its lower part. In case you want to do the upper part of the canyon, bring equipment material because the facilities are in poor condition or nonexistent!

Desde Amurrio a Balmaseda por la A624, en el p.k 44 o 45 cogemos el desvío a Izoria y Maroño Subiremos al embalse de Maroño y seguiremos hasta Aguíñiga en donde aparcaremos

From Amurrio to Balmaseda on the A624, at km 44 or 45 take the turn-off to Izoria and Maroño. We will go up to the Maroño reservoir and continue to Aguíñiga where we will park.

Tenemos que salir por el hayedo, el cual dejaremos atrás para ir a coger el sendero que va de Lendoño al Portillo de Menérdiga, poco antes de llegar al Portillo, bajo los murallones que cierran el circo, dejaremos el sendero para ir a la derecha sin perder altura en busca de la surgencia y de nuestro cauce. Otra opción es por el sendero de acceso a Salto o Somo, dejamos atrás la cabecera de Somo y seguimos a Fuente el Haya, aquí podremos empezar a descender el barranco o seguir el sendero para ir igualmente al sendero que sube al Portillo

Another option is by the access path to Salto or Somo, we leave behind the head of Somo and continue to Fuente el Haya, here we can begin to descend the ravine or follow the path to also go to the path that climbs to Portillo.

Primera parte vertical y de rápeles largos, luego ya el barranco va perdiendo altura pero ganando caudal con los aportes del bco Salto y Pasada Mala, momento en el que llegamos al rápel más espectacular

Tras ese rápel podemos salir por la pista que se nos cruza o seguir haciendo 2 rápeles más para ir a la parte de los meandros, zona mágica y salir por el puente al lado del pueblo.
