May - October
Summary:
A long route with very few and spaced short rappels in a narrow environment full of crystalline pools.
Access:
It's best to use a water taxi for the return trip. First organise the boat: contact Nicholas +30 698 4508105 (English, no WhatsApp known) to check that he is running the boat. Arrange an approximate pickup time.
Drive the lower car to Pachía Ammos beach. Park at the western end at Nicholas's beach place.
Drive the second car back along the road until you find the dirt road on the right (east) that leads to "KHMNIOTIZZA".
Go up the dirt road for about 2 km until you reach a small clearing on the right, 100 m before the church and shortly after a steep dirt road on the left.
Park the car.
- If a 4WD vehicle is available, you can shorten both the approach and return by 20 minutes by taking the dirt road to the picnic area where you park.
Approach (1 h 30):
Take the dirt road on the left that climbs very steeply for about 1.2 km to a picnic area.
Arrive near a grove and continue left, leaving the grove on the right. Descend to Vatos, about 800 m from the picnic area.
Tour (2 h):
The route is straightforward and begins approximately fifty metres downstream from the confluence with the Karagiannaki.
About a third of the way along the route, on river left, you come across the final waterfall of Kousianda.
Return (10 min):
Walk to the beach and call Nicholas.
If walking back to Pachía Ammos beach: about 500 m from the sea, on the right bank, a steep hiking trail begins.
Take the hiking trail, about 3 km long and signed with red marks, which leads to the beach of Pachia Ammos through an often rugged path, with
exposed sections and with a beautiful view of the sea. The first stretch, steeply uphill, leads to the most exposed section. A descent, very steep at times, followed by a climb leads to the pass from which you descend towards the beach and the parked vehicle.
