Summary:
A short but very playful canyon. With low water flow most of the obstacles can in fact be overcome without the use of a rope.
Access:
Downstream: coming from Dumenza you reach the stream just before the village of Curiglia, where the road (SP6) crosses it via a large bridge (signposted Torrente Crana). Park just before the bridge in some pull-outs on the left-hand side (46°03'17"N 8°48'04"E). Upstream (shuttle): continue to Curiglia and take the road to Viasco (Via Cesare Battisti, on the right after the Town Hall). At the “no entry” sign at the top of the village (near a fountain), turn right (Via Roma) and continue a few hundred meters to a parking area on the left (46°03'34.5"N 8°48'23"E).
Approach (20 min):
With shuttle: from the upstream parking, continue along Via Roma towards Sarona until the bridge over the Riale stream. Cross the bridge and take a faint trail starting on the right, between the bridge and the roadside barrier. The trail, not very obvious, follows a series of terraces without gaining or losing elevation. Once the canyon comes into view, descend to the streambed near the first rappel (46°03'03.5"N 8°48'20.5"E), following a few stone cairns. Approx. 20 minutes. Without shuttle: from the downstream parking, cross the bridge over the Crana and immediately find a steep trail climbing into the forest on the right. This faint path gains elevation quickly along a small ridge. At about 650 m a.s.l. turn right, following the remains of an old trail that enters the valley with a gentle ascent. After passing some ruined huts, follow the stone cairns that indicate the best descent route to the first rappel (approx. 25 minutes, +100 m elevation gain).
Tour (1 h 30):
01- C10 (1 sx) 02- C8 (2 sx) 03- C6 (MC 2sx + 2sx) 04- C8 (MC 2sx + 2sx) 05- C8 (2sx) 06- C9 (MC 1sx + 1sx) 07- C4 (1 sx) 08- C6 (1 sx) 09- C10 (1 dx) 10- C5 (MC 2dx + 2dx) 11- C15 (2 sx) 12- C10 (2sx + dev -1m)
Return (5 min):
Immediately after the last rappel the canyon opens up and the road bridge becomes clearly visible. Climb up on the right bank, first below the bridge and then to its right, until reaching the paved road and the cars. Approx. 5 minutes, +40 m elevation gain.
