Summary:
A somewhat discontinuous route with several noteworthy landscape views, characterized by green and crystalline water typical of all the canyons on the island. Along the itinerary we will find several verticals and long sections of downclimbing.
Access:
Car shuttle required, or can use mountain taxi to be taken to the broadcast tower (call or WhatsApp ‭Sakis +30 694 7099107‬, some English). Bottom car: Drive along the northern coastal road almost to the end until you reach the intersection for Ano Meria (signposted KAPYAIEZ TABEPNA, Karydies Taverna), turn right. After 1.2km at the first crossroads continue straight and at the second turn right, always following the signs for KAPYAIEZ TABEPNA. Park next to the tavern (about 1 km from the last crossroads). Upper car: Drive up the mountain to the broadcast tower at 40.4613, 25.6473 (rough road with sharp stones).
Approach (1 h 30):
From the car park, behind the repeaters, a steep, stony, 2 m wide path starts, very obvious and marked with blue marks. Continue along the path until you reach a flat clearing where you will find the ruins of refuge (altitude 900 m). Go past the ruins and continue along the path, which follows the crest, to an area with large trees at the base of a high rocky spur. Go around the rocky spur on the right side and climb steeply, overcoming difference in height of about 20 m, to find a passage between the rocks and look out over a large landslide. Follow the landslide zigzagging between large boulders and brambles, referring to the blue marks, going up and down, to climb up the hill in front. Arrive at the saddle that divides the Fonias valley from the Angistros valley (altitude 1010 m), and find a double Y-shaped arrow, drawn in blue, which marks the crossroads between the paths for Angistros and Giali. Turn left and continue downhill into the drainage basin of a tributary of the Angistros, which is initially dry but is soon fed by small resurgences and small tributaries. Continue down the riverbed until the beginning of the verticality where you intercept, on the right bank (altitude 790), a trail, indicated with blue marks, which allows you to skip some uninteresting and not equipped differences in height. Follow the path for 200 meters and then return to the bed of the tributary until the confluence with the main branch of the Angistros which comes from the right and carries the same amount of water.
Tour (5 h):
See topo. Pay attention to sharp edges and to the recovery of the ropes.
Return (20 min):
At about 160m altitude 40.4580, 25.6660 find a rough road. Navigate back to the car. There may be an exit at 220m river left.
